The North American Basketball League (NABL) was established in 2013 as a fictional basketball simulation league using Grey Dog Software's Fast Break Pro Basketball 2013. There were originally 16 teams in the inaugural season (2001), with expansions being held prior to the 4th (2004) and the 9th (2009) seasons. Of the original 16 teams, 11 are still located in the same city with the same nickname.

The first expansion took place prior to the 2003 season with the addition of the Boston Generals, Chicago Toros, Newark Bears, and Oklahoma City Tomahawks. The Oklahoma City move relocated to Milwaukee in 2010 and became the Rhinos. The other three teams have remained in their expansion cities. The second expansion took place prior to the 2009 season, and added the Atlanta Swarm, DC Outbreak, Kansas City Mavericks, and Portland Lumberjacks. The Atlanta Swarm lasted in Atlanta for just a single season before moving to Cincinnati and changing the nickname to the Royals.

The Nashville Rebels have won the most NABL Championships with 5, the Buffalo Storm are 2nd with 3. The Austin 36ers have reached the finals the most, with 7 conference titles, winning the league championship just once.
